All art is the original work of the author

  1. “Walden,” like “Life on the Mississippi” and many other nineteenth century memoirs, have all the good parts in the first few chapters. Most of us current-day readers have probably never finished these books either. Authors were often paid by the word then, and big books may seem more important than short works. “On Winthrop Pond” shows that short, and beautiful, is often better than long.

    1. Readers back then had fewer distractions and more time to read. The sheer volume of reading material in whatever format now is an avalanche compared to back then. While most people these days are streaming Game of Thrones, etc., the evenings in the 19th century homes of those who could afford to buy books were basically the only entertainment around … except for the tavern. ;))
