Love in the time of COVID-19

|

Touch is how we show our most loved people our care. A medium beyond words to say, I hear you; I’m here for you. One of the cruelest things about this highly contagious virus now sweeping the world is that it steals this language from us when we most need it. Our breath, our hands have become mediums of transmission. With touch now a threat, we must avoid our neighbors, our coworkers, our friends, our families, in an effort protect our most vulnerable and the healthcare system tasked with treating them. If there are people you’re missing as we come together by staying apart, I hope these remotely deliverable touches are useful to you for telling them so. Make screenshots of what you like and share as widely as you wish.

A tight hug
One bag of popcorn, shared by many friends
A sloppy kiss
Campfire whiskey pass, swiggin’ right from the bottle
Sharing a good spoon, or a good *spoon*
Just leanin’ heads
Faceplanting in the same chocolate cake

  1. Just last night my wife was saying how badly she felt for all the elderly people in our neighborhood who won’t be touched by anyone during this quarantine phase…

I, on the other hand, was thinking how grateful I am that her friends will stop trying to hug me now. The last time we had dinner with some of them, I actually physically raised my hands to ward off an unwanted hug, but too late. I ended up with both my hands full, if you get my meaning, and both of us really embarrassed. It was then that my wife said, “He doesn’t like to be hugged by anyone but me.”

  2. Well put, Sarah. Thank you for your heartfelt illustrations and words. I like the spoons!

We’re all connected. Hug hug hug!
